Making mistakes can actually help us stumble on to good ideas. For example, when working with superstar bands like U2 or Coldplay, legendary producer Brian Eno has a counterintuitive approach to help the band find a fresh sound: he makes the band members trade instruments.

The idea isn’t to help Bono become a full-time drummer. Instead, it’s to help the band become unstuck from their standard sound by making mistakes with unfamiliar instruments, and finding new ideas to incorporate into their sound out of the resulting mess.
